Summary
Replace the rear cameras on an iPhone 15. Indicated when images are fuzzy, noisy, or autofocus fails. Requires replacement back glass adhesive. Note: On iOS 17.6 and earlier, replacement cameras may trigger pairing warnings but will still function. On iOS 18+, calibrate genuine modules via Apple’s Repair Assistant.
Procedure
Preparation
- Drain battery below 25%. Power off device (hold Power + Volume, then slide to power off).
- If glass is cracked, cover with overlapping strips of packing tape. Ensure a smooth area near the bottom edge for suction cup placement.
- Mark opening pick at 3 mm from tip with a permanent marker to prevent over-insertion damage.
Back Glass Removal
- Remove the two P2 pentalobe screws (7.7 mm) flanking the charging port.
- Heat the bottom edge of the back glass until hot to the touch.
- Apply suction handle to bottom edge, pull to create a gap, and insert an opening pick.
- Slide pick along the bottom edge — do not exceed 5 mm depth. Leave pick in corner.
- Heat the right edge. Slide pick around the bottom right corner up to the volume down button — max 7 mm depth. Do not go past the volume buttons.
- Heat the left edge. Insert a second pick at the bottom left corner and slide it to the top left — max 5 mm depth. Leave inserted.
- Heat the top edge. Slide second pick along the top edge — max 3 mm depth. You may hear clips release.
- Heat the top right corner. Slide pick around to the volume up button — max 4 mm depth.
- Gently swing back glass open to the right. Rest it against a raised surface — do not strain the cable.
Disconnection
- Remove two Y000 tri-point screws (1.3 mm) from the lower connector cover and slide it toward the top to unclip. Remove cover.
- Pry up and disconnect the battery press connector using an opening pick.
- Remove the Y000 tri-point screw (0.9 mm) from the middle connector cover. Push cover toward the bottom to unclip and remove.
- Pry up and disconnect the wireless charging coil and NFC connector.
- Remove the back glass completely.
Camera Removal
- Pry up and disconnect the two rear camera press connectors and the antenna press connector (top right of battery).
- Remove three Phillips #00 screws (2.3 mm) securing the rear cameras.
- Lift the upper camera and antenna press connector cables out of their channels along the battery edge.
- Insert an opening pick between the middle press connector cable and its adjacent cable to separate the adhesive bond.
- Pry up the top edge of the rear cameras with a spudger, then pull cameras toward the top of the phone, routing cables under the antenna cable. Remove cameras.
Reassembly
- Place new rear cameras into slot, routing cables underneath the antenna cable in the correct order.
- Slide rear camera cable back into its slot along the battery.
- Install three Phillips #00 screws (2.3 mm) to secure cameras.
- Reconnect the two rear camera press connectors and antenna press connector.
- Test before sealing: Reconnect battery and back glass, power on, verify camera function, then power off and disconnect before continuing.
- Remove old adhesive from frame using spudger (roll/peel technique), then clean residue with 90%+ isopropyl alcohol on a lint-free cloth. Allow to fully evaporate.
- Orient new back glass adhesive correctly (align cutouts for spring contacts and camera bump). Peel back liner from the bottom and press adhesive into frame starting from the bottom edge. Work around all edges. Remove all liners.
- Reconnect wireless charging coil connector, then battery connector.
- Reinstall middle connector cover (clip both metal clips into logic board) and lower connector cover (hook top edge first). Install Y000 screws: 0.9 mm (middle cover), 1.3 mm x2 (lower cover).
- Lay back glass down onto frame and press around the perimeter to engage all clips.
- Heat edges of back glass until hot to the touch. Press firmly around the perimeter.
- Compress adhesive bond for at least 30 minutes (overnight preferred) using evenly distributed weight, accounting for the camera bump.
- Install the two P2 pentalobe screws (7.7 mm) at the charging port.
- On iOS 18+, run Apple’s Repair Assistant to calibrate the camera module if using genuine parts.
Notes
- Cable hazard: Do not insert pick near the volume down button — a fragile cable runs along the back glass in that area
