Summary
Replace the Taptic Engine in iPhone 15 Pro Max if vibrations feel rattly or intermittent. This procedure requires disassembling the device, removing the screen, and accessing the Taptic Engine beneath internal components. You’ll need replacement screen adhesive to complete the repair.
Procedure
-
Prepare for disassembly: Drain battery below 25%, unplug cables, power off phone using power + volume buttons.
-
Protect cracked glass: Apply overlapping packing tape over any cracks, ensuring smooth area near bottom for suction cup.
-
Mark opening picks: Mark 3 mm from tip with permanent marker to prevent inserting too deep and damaging components.
-
Remove pentalobe screws: Use P2 pentalobe driver to remove two 7.2 mm screws on either side of charging port.
-
Heat and open screen: Heat bottom edge until hot to touch, apply suction handle, pull to create gap, insert opening pick.
-
Remove screen adhesive:
– Bottom edge: Don’t go deeper than 3 mm, slide back/forth, leave pick in bottom right corner
– Heat right edge, separate adhesive (max 5 mm depth), release right clip
– Heat top edge, separate adhesive (max 3 mm depth)
– Heat left edge, separate adhesive (max 2 mm depth to avoid cables) -
Disconnect screen: Gently swing screen open to left, rest against support object. Disconnect screen press connector.
-
Access Taptic Engine: Remove logic board cover screws (Y000 driver: one 2.1 mm, five 1.5 mm screws). Disconnect battery, ambient light sensor, and loudspeaker (Phillips #000: three 2.1 mm, one 2.9 mm screws).
-
Remove Taptic Engine: Separate tape connecting Taptic Engine and loudspeaker using opening pick. Remove Taptic Engine.
Notes
- Battery is safety hazard if charged—discharge below 25% before disassembly
- Two delicate screen cables near action button and left edge—handle carefully
- Spring contacts around perimeter—don’t exceed depth limits to avoid bending
- Track all screws by location—different lengths must return to original positions
- Replace screen adhesive during reassembly
- Avoid heat damage to battery during screen opening
