Summary

Replace the loudspeaker if sound is crackling or distorted and not due to software issues. This procedure requires disassembly to the loudspeaker component level and replacement screen adhesive for reassembly.

Procedure

Pre-Disassembly

  1. Drain battery below 25%
  2. Power off the device (hold power + volume button, slide to power off)
  3. Tape over any cracked screen or back glass with overlapping packing tape
  4. Mark opening picks at 3 mm from tip using permanent marker or tape a coin at 3 mm

Screen Removal

  1. Remove two 7.2 mm pentalobe screws on either side of charging port (P2 driver)
  2. Heat bottom edge with hair dryer or heat gun until hot to touch
  3. Apply suction handle to bottom edge and pull up with steady force to create gap
  4. Insert opening pick into gap
  5. Slide pick along bottom edge (max 3 mm depth) to separate adhesive; leave pick in bottom right corner
  6. Heat right edge until hot to touch
  7. Slide pick around bottom right corner (max 5 mm depth) until feeling hard stop at clip; rotate pick flat and twist to release clip
  8. Insert second pick and slide both picks to separate right edge adhesive (max 5 mm depth)
  9. Heat top edge until hot to touch
  10. Slide pick around top edge (max 3 mm depth) to release clips and adhesive
  11. Heat left edge until hot to touch
  12. Slide pick along left edge (max 2 mm depth) to separate adhesive
  13. Gently swing screen open to the left; rest against support object
  14. Disconnect screen press connector

Access to Loudspeaker

  1. Remove six tri-point Y000 screws from logic board cover (one 2.1 mm, five 1.5 mm screws)
  2. Slide logic board cover toward bottom to clear sensor cable
  3. Disconnect battery press connector
  4. Disconnect ambient light sensor press connector
  5. Remove screen completely

Loudspeaker Replacement

  1. Remove four Phillips #000 screws securing loudspeaker (three 2.1 mm, one 2.9 mm)
  2. Separate tape connecting Taptic Engine and loudspeaker by inserting opening pick under tape and sliding toward left edge
  3. Remove and replace loudspeaker

Notes

  • Two delicate cables connect screen to phone (above action button and near middle of left edge)—avoid damaging
  • Multiple spring contacts around perimeter—do not insert pick deeper than specified depths
  • Track all screws and return to exact locations during reassembly
  • Use new screen adhesive during reassembly
  • Do not heat phone hotter than hot-to-touch—risk of battery damage
  • Press connectors require aligned insertion and gentle pressure on both sides to click into place
