Summary

Replace the earpiece speaker if you experience static or crackling sound during phone calls. This repair requires disassembling the phone and removing the screen to access the earpiece speaker component.

Procedure

Preparation

  1. Drain battery below 25%
  2. Power off the phone
  3. Apply packing tape over cracked glass (if present)
  4. Mark opening picks at 3 mm from tip using permanent marker or coin tape

Screen Removal

  1. Remove two 7.2 mm pentalobe screws on either side of charging port using P2 driver
  2. Heat bottom edge of screen with hair dryer or heat gun until hot to touch
  3. Apply suction handle to bottom edge and pull to create gap
  4. Insert opening pick into gap
  5. Slide pick along bottom edge (max 3 mm depth) to separate adhesive; leave pick in bottom right corner
  6. Heat right edge until hot to touch
  7. Slide pick around bottom right corner toward power button (max 5 mm depth) until clip stops
  8. Twist pick to release right clip; insert second pick to right of first
  9. Slide picks to separate right edge adhesive; leave inserted
  10. Heat top edge until hot to touch
  11. Slide pick along top edge (max 3 mm depth) to release clips and adhesive
  12. Heat left edge until hot to touch
  13. Slide pick along left edge (max 2 mm depth) to separate adhesive; avoid two cables near left edge
  14. Gently swing screen open to the left; rest against box to prevent cable strain

Logic Board Access

  1. Remove six screws from logic board cover using Y000 tri-point driver (one 2.1 mm, five 1.5 mm screws)
  2. Slide logic board cover toward bottom to clear sensor cable
  3. Disconnect battery press connector using opening pick
  4. Disconnect ambient light sensor press connector
  5. Disconnect screen press connector
  6. Remove screen

Earpiece Speaker Replacement

  1. Remove two screws securing earpiece speaker using Phillips #000 driver (one 1.8 mm, one 2.4 mm screw)
  2. Insert spudger flat end between left edge of earpiece speaker and frame
  3. Pry up until speaker can be grabbed with fingers
  4. Remove speaker
  5. Install replacement speaker (reverse order during reassembly)

Notes

  • Keep track of all screws and their exact locations for reassembly
  • Be careful not to damage two delicate cables above action button and near left edge
  • Avoid bending spring contacts around phone perimeter
  • Do not heat phone hotter than hot to touch—battery is susceptible to heat damage
  • During reassembly, apply new screen adhesive before reinstalling screen
  • When reconnecting press connectors, align carefully and press both sides until seated flat
