Summary
This guide provides step-by-step instructions for removing and replacing cracked or broken back glass on an iPhone 15 Pro Max. The procedure involves disassembly, adhesive separation, wireless charging coil disconnection, and glass removal. Replacement back glass adhesive is required for reassembly.
Procedure
- Prepare for disassembly: Drain battery below 25%, unplug cables, and power off the device.
- Protect against glass shards: Apply overlapping packing tape over cracks, ensuring a clear area at the bottom edge for suction cup placement.
- Mark opening picks: Mark picks 3 mm from the tip using permanent marker to prevent over-insertion and device damage.
- Remove pentalobe screws: Use P2 pentalobe driver to remove two 7.2 mm screws on either side of the charging port.
- Heat bottom edge: Use hair dryer or heat gun until hot to touch (avoid overheating—risk to battery).
- Create initial gap: Apply suction handle to bottom edge, pull up with steady force, and insert opening pick into gap.
- Separate bottom edge adhesive: Insert pick no deeper than 5 mm, slide back and forth to separate adhesive, leave pick in bottom left corner.
- Heat left edge: Heat until hot to touch.
- Separate left edge adhesive: Insert second pick no deeper than 5 mm, slide to top left corner, leave in place.
- Heat top edge: Heat until hot to touch.
- Separate top edge adhesive: Insert third pick no deeper than 5 mm, slide from top left to top right. If stuck, use spudger to press top clips inward.
- Separate top right corner: Rotate pick around corner, slide to volume up button (do not slide past—avoid wireless charging cable damage).
- Heat right edge: Heat until hot to touch.
- Separate right edge adhesive: Insert fourth pick at bottom edge, rotate around bottom right corner, slide to volume down button (do not slide past—avoid cable damage).
- Remove back glass: Gently swing glass open over right edge. If stuck, check perimeter for missed adhesive or clips. Rest against object to prevent cable strain.
- Remove wireless charging cover: Use Y000 tri-point driver to remove 1.0 mm screw, use tweezers to slide cover out.
- Disconnect wireless charging coil: Use opening pick to pry and disconnect press connector.
- Complete removal: Remove back glass.
- Reassemble: Follow instructions in reverse order using replacement adhesive.
Notes
- On iOS 18+, pair new genuine rear glass parts using Apple’s Repair Assistant after reassembly.
- Avoid inserting picks deeper than 5 mm to prevent internal damage.
- Protect wireless charging cable near volume buttons during adhesive separation.
- If top clips are stuck, use spudger to press inward for release.
- Heat edges until hot to touch—do not overheat (battery damage risk).
- On iOS 18+, calibrate replacement parts via Settings → General → About → Parts & Service History.
- Dispose of old glass at R2 or e-Stewards certified e-waste recycler.
