Summary

Replace the earpiece speaker if sound during calls sounds like static or crackling. This repair requires disassembling the back glass and accessing internal components. You will need replacement back glass adhesive to complete the repair.

Procedure

Preparation

  1. Drain battery below 25% (lithium-ion safety hazard)
  2. Unplug all cables
  3. Power off: hold power + volume button, slide to power off
  4. Apply overlapping packing tape over any cracks to protect yourself and ease disassembly
  5. Mark your opening pick at 3mm from tip with permanent marker to prevent over-insertion damage

Back Glass Removal

  1. Use P2 pentalobe driver to remove two 7.7mm screws on either side of charging port
  2. Heat bottom edge of back glass with hair dryer or heat gun until hot to touch
  3. Apply suction handle to bottom edge; pull up with steady force to create gap
  4. Insert opening pick into gap; don’t insert deeper than 5mm along bottom edge
  5. Slide pick back and forth to separate adhesive; leave pick in bottom right corner
  6. Heat right edge until hot; insert pick no deeper than 7mm; rotate around bottom right corner and slide halfway up right edge until you feel a hard stop
  7. Heat left edge until hot; insert second pick at bottom edge; rotate around bottom left corner and slide to top left corner
  8. Heat top edge until hot; rotate second pick around top left corner to top right corner (listen for clicks as clips release); don’t insert deeper than 3mm
  9. Heat top right corner until hot; rotate second pick around top right corner to volume up button; don’t insert deeper than 4mm
  10. Gently swing open back glass to the right; rest against raised surface to avoid straining cable

Internal Access

  1. Use tri-point Y000 driver to remove two 1.3mm screws securing lower connector cover
  2. Use tweezers to slide cover toward top to unlatch from logic board
  3. Rotate bottom edge of back glass to left; use opening pick to pry up and disconnect battery press connector below volume buttons
  4. Use tri-point Y000 driver to remove two 1.3mm screws securing upper connector cover
  5. Use opening pick to pry up and disconnect three press connectors: antenna, front sensors, and front camera
  6. Use tweezers or fingers to remove front camera and sensors from frame recess

Notes

  • Keep track of each screw—ensure it returns to exact original location
  • Delicate cable connects back glass near volume up button—do not insert pick in this area
  • Multiple spring contacts around perimeter—do not insert pick deeper than specified depth in each step to avoid bending
  • Avoid inserting pick near volume buttons to prevent damaging wireless charging cable
  • When reconnecting press connectors, align over socket and press down one side until it clicks, then other side; ensure it sits flat as insulating rubber may prevent full connection
