Summary

Procedure to replace the primary microphone in an iPhone 15. This microphone is a standalone unit separate from the microphones integrated into the charging port and power button assemblies. Replacement back glass adhesive is required to complete this repair.

Procedure

Preparation

  1. Drain battery below 25%. Power off the device and unplug all cables.
  2. If glass is cracked, cover with overlapping strips of packing tape. Ensure a smooth area near the bottom edge for a suction cup.
  3. Mark opening picks at 3 mm from the tip to prevent over-insertion damage.

Back Glass Removal

  1. Remove the two P2 pentalobe screws (7.7 mm) on either side of the charging port.
  2. Heat the bottom edge of the back glass until hot to the touch. Apply suction handle, create a gap, and insert an opening pick.
  3. Separate adhesive around the perimeter using heated sections and opening picks, observing the following depth limits:
    – Bottom edge: max 5 mm
    – Right edge: max 7 mm — stop at volume down button; do not slice past volume buttons
    – Left edge: max 5 mm
    – Top edge: max 3 mm
    – Top right corner/right edge: max 4 mm
  4. Leave picks inserted at each section to prevent adhesive re-sealing.
  5. Gently swing the back glass open to the right. Rest it on a raised surface to avoid straining the cable.

Disconnect Internal Components

  1. Remove two Y000 tri-point screws (1.3 mm) from the lower connector cover; slide cover toward the top of the phone to unlatch and remove.
  2. Disconnect the battery press connector using an opening pick (connector is just below the volume buttons).
  3. Remove the Y000 tri-point screw (0.9 mm) from the middle connector cover; push cover toward the bottom to unclip and remove.
  4. Disconnect the wireless charging coil and NFC press connector.
  5. Remove the back glass fully.

Loudspeaker Removal

  1. Remove Y000 tri-point screw (1.3 mm) securing the grounding clip and loudspeaker, then remove four Phillips #000 screws (1.6 mm) securing the loudspeaker.
  2. Pry up the right edge of the loudspeaker and remove it.

Taptic Engine Removal

  1. Remove two Phillips #000 screws (1.9 mm) from the Taptic Engine press connector cover; remove cover.
  2. Disconnect the Taptic Engine press connector.
  3. Remove the Phillips #000 screw (1.9 mm) securing the Taptic Engine and remove it.

Microphone Removal

  1. Pry up and disconnect the microphone press connector using a spudger.
  2. Remove the following screws securing the microphone:
    • Y000 tri-point screw (1.3 mm) securing grounding clip and microphone
    • Phillips #000 screw (1.3 mm) securing bottom right of microphone
    • Two standoff screws (3.0 mm) securing the top of the microphone (use standoff driver; thin flathead driver acceptable but risk of stripping)
  3. Insert spudger flat end under the top edge of the microphone and pry up to release the adhesive gasket. Avoid bending any grounding tabs.
  4. Peel up and remove the microphone.

Microphone Installation

  1. Remove old adhesive from the frame. Clean any residue with >90% isopropyl alcohol and a lint-free cloth.
  2. If replacement microphone does not have pre-applied adhesive: remove white liner, apply adhesive (pull tab pointing up, metal side facing up), then remove blue liner.
  3. Insert the microphone at a downward angle so the adhesive adheres firmly around the sound channel. Press firmly into place.
  4. Reinstall screws in reverse order:
    • Y000 tri-point screw (1.3 mm) — grounding clip
    • Phillips #000 screw (1.3 mm) — bottom right
    • Two standoff screws (3.0 mm) — top of microphone
  5. Connect the microphone press connector.

Reassembly

  1. Reinstall loudspeaker; install Y000 (1.3 mm) and four Phillips #000 (1.6 mm) screws.
  2. Clean all old back glass adhesive from frame using heat, spudger rolling technique, and >90% isopropyl alcohol. Allow to fully dry before applying new adhesive.
  3. Pre-seal test: Connect battery and back glass temporarily, power on, and verify microphone and device function. Power off and disconnect before continuing.
  4. Apply new back glass adhesive: align bottom edge first, verify spring contacts align with cut
