Summary

Replace the front camera assembly (front-facing camera + Face ID hardware) on an iPhone 15. The assembly is paired to the logic board. Replacing it will disable Face ID unless recalibrated via Apple’s Repair Assistant (iOS 18+). Requires replacement back glass adhesive.

Procedure

Tools Required

  • P2 pentalobe driver
  • Tri-point Y000 driver
  • Opening picks (×2)
  • Spudger
  • Tweezers
  • Hair dryer or heat gun
  • Suction handle
  • Permanent marker
  • High-concentration isopropyl alcohol (>90%)
  • Microfiber/lint-free cloth

Preparation

  1. Drain battery below 25%. Power off using Power + Volume button → slide to power off.
  2. If glass is cracked, apply overlapping packing tape strips over the surface. Leave a suction cup-sized area clear near the bottom edge.
  3. Mark opening pick at 3 mm from the tip with a permanent marker to prevent over-insertion damage.

Back Glass Removal

  1. Remove the two 7.7 mm P2 pentalobe screws on either side of the charging port.
  2. Heat the bottom edge of the back glass until hot to the touch. Apply suction handle, pull to create a gap, and insert opening pick.
  3. ⚠️ Avoid: inserting pick near the volume down button (cable present); inserting deeper than specified at each edge.
  4. Slide pick along bottom edge — max insertion depth 5 mm. Leave pick inserted at bottom right corner.
  5. Heat right edge. Rotate pick around bottom right corner, slide up to volume down button — max depth 7 mm. Do not go past volume buttons.
  6. Heat left edge. Insert second pick at bottom left, slide up to top left corner — max depth 5 mm. Leave inserted.
  7. Heat top edge. Rotate second pick along top edge left to right — max depth 3 mm. Leave inserted.
  8. Heat top right corner. Rotate pick around corner, slide to volume up button — max depth 4 mm.
  9. Gently swing back glass open to the right. Rest it against a raised surface to avoid straining the cable.

Disconnecting Internals

  1. Remove two 1.3 mm Y000 screws from the lower connector cover. Slide cover toward top of phone to unlatch and remove.
  2. Disconnect the battery press connector using an opening pick (marked with + and −).
  3. Remove the 0.9 mm Y000 screw from the middle connector cover. Push cover toward bottom to unclip and remove.
  4. Disconnect the wireless charging coil and NFC connector.
  5. Remove the back glass fully.
  6. Remove two 1.3 mm Y000 screws from the upper connector cover and remove the cover.
  7. Pry up and disconnect the three press connectors: antenna, front sensors, and front camera.
  8. Pull the front camera assembly out of its recess and remove it.

Front Camera Installation

  1. Slide the new front camera assembly into its recess. Press flat.
  2. Reconnect the three press connectors (antenna, front sensors, front camera). Press each side until it clicks — do not force.
  3. Replace the upper connector cover and install the two 1.3 mm Y000 screws.

Pre-Seal Function Test

  1. Reconnect battery and back glass temporarily. Power on and verify front camera and other functions. Power off, then disconnect battery and back glass before continuing.

Back Glass Adhesive & Reassembly

  1. Remove old adhesive: heat if needed, roll with spudger tip, pull off with tweezers.
  2. Clean frame with IPA (>90%) on a lint-free cloth. Wipe in one direction. Allow to dry fully.
  3. Orient new adhesive against the phone using the rear camera cutout and spring contact cutouts as alignment guides.
  4. Peel the back liner from the bottom only. Align bottom edge first, then lay adhesive around the frame pressing firmly. Do not reposition once placed — start over with new adhesive if misaligned.
  5. Press adhesive around full perimeter with spudger. Confirm all spring contacts and rear camera pass through cutouts in the liner.
  6. Remove the top adhesive liner (may be single piece or multiple sections).
  7. Reconnect wireless charging coil and battery press connectors.
  8. Seat middle connector cover — overhang the logic board slot, press down, slide upward until both clips engage.
  9. Hook the lower connector cover into its slot. Install 0.9 mm screw (middle cover) and two 1.3 mm screws (lower cover) with Y000 driver
