Summary

Step-by-step procedure to replace the rear-facing camera assembly on an iPhone 14 Pro Max. Requires screen removal to access the camera. Device will lose IP rating after repair unless original adhesive is fully replaced.

Procedure

  1. Power off the iPhone completely before starting.
  2. Remove pentalobe screws – Remove two 6.8 mm P2 pentalobe screws from the bottom edge.
  3. Prepare opening pick – Mark 3 mm from the tip to prevent inserting too deep.
  4. Heat bottom edge – Apply heat for ~90 seconds until glass is slightly too hot to touch. Create a gap with a suction cup/Anti-Clamp, then insert an opening pick under the screen’s plastic bezel.
  5. Slice right edge adhesive – Heat right edge 90 seconds. Slide pick around the bottom-right corner and up to the top-right corner. Do not insert more than 3 mm.
  6. Slice top edge adhesive – Heat top edge 90 seconds. Slide pick from top-right corner halfway across the top, stopping before the earpiece speaker cut-out. Do not insert more than 3 mm.
  7. Slice left edge adhesive – Heat left edge 90 seconds. Insert a second pick at the bottom-left corner. Twist both picks simultaneously to release left edge clips. Do not insert a pick along the left edge — cables run there.
  8. Open iPhone – Swing the screen up from the right side like a book. Prop it up safely.
  9. Remove battery connector cover – Use Y000 screwdriver to remove 8 screws (five 1.3 mm, two 1.6 mm, one 1.9 mm). Slide cover downward to clear flex cables and remove.
  10. Disconnect battery – Pry battery connector straight up with a spudger. Bend connector away from the board to prevent accidental contact.
  11. Disconnect display cables – Pry both display connectors straight up from their sockets using a spudger.
  12. Remove screen – Lift screen away. Clean adhesive areas with >90% isopropyl alcohol before reassembly.
  13. Remove camera cover screws – Use Y000 screwdriver for four 1.5 mm and one 1.2 mm screws. Use Phillips screwdriver for one 1.7 mm screw.
  14. Remove camera cover – Grip with tweezers, slide toward volume buttons to free the small metal edge from the frame, then remove.
  15. Disconnect ultra wide & telephoto cable – Pry connector straight up from socket with a spudger.
  16. Disconnect wide lens cable – Pry connector straight up from socket with a spudger.
  17. Pry up camera assembly – Insert spudger under the bottom edge of the assembly and tilt downward to lift.
  18. Remove camera assembly – Lift out with tweezers or fingers.
  19. Install replacement assembly – Seat new assembly, reconnect wide lens cable, then ultra wide/telephoto cable.
  20. Reassemble in reverse order – Reinstall camera cover (align metal edge into frame recess), reconnect display cables, reconnect battery, reinstall battery connector cover, reseat screen (align top edge clips first), apply new adhesive, reinstall pentalobe screws.
  21. Test before sealing – Power on and verify camera function before applying new screen adhesive.
  22. Calibrate if applicable – On iOS 18+, navigate to Settings → General → About → Parts & Service History, tap “Restart & Finish Repair,” and follow prompts.

Notes

  • Screw tracking is critical – All screws vary in length; returning them to the wrong holes can cause board damage.
  • 3 mm insertion limit – Never insert picks deeper than 3 mm; internal components and sensors are at risk.
  • Left edge cables – Do not insert picks along the left edge; display cables run beneath.
  • Press connectors – Reconnect display press connectors by pressing one side until it clicks, then the other. Never press the center.
  • Water resistance – IP rating will be compromised unless fresh adhesive is applied during reassembly.
  • Model note – Guide created with model A2894 (international); procedure is the same across iPhone 14 Pro Max variants.
  • iOS 18 calibration – Genuine replacement camera modules can be calibrated via Apple’s Repair Assistant on iOS 18 and later.
