Summary
Step-by-step procedure to replace the earpiece speaker on an iPhone 14 Pro Max. Requires screen removal as a prerequisite. Replacement adhesive is needed to reseal the display; note that IP rating will likely not be restored after repair.
Procedure
- Power off the iPhone completely before beginning.
- Remove pentalobe screws – Remove the two 6.8 mm P2 pentalobe screws from the bottom edge.
- Prepare opening pick – Mark a depth of 3 mm from the tip to avoid inserting too far and damaging internals.
- Tape cracked screens – If the screen is cracked, cover it with clear packing tape before proceeding.
- Heat bottom edge – Apply heat for ~90 seconds until the surface is slightly too hot to touch.
- Create opening gap – Use a suction handle or Anti-Clamp to create a gap, then insert an opening pick under the screen’s plastic bezel at the bottom edge.
- Slice right edge adhesive – Heat the right edge (~90 sec), then slide the pick around the bottom-right corner and up to the top-right corner. Do not insert more than 3 mm.
- Slice top edge adhesive – Heat the top edge (~90 sec), then slide the pick from the top-right corner halfway across the top, stopping before the earpiece speaker cut-out. Do not exceed 3 mm depth.
- Separate left edge adhesive – Heat the left edge (~90 sec). Insert a second pick at the bottom-left corner. Do not slide the pick along the left edge — delicate cables are present. Twist both picks simultaneously to release the left edge clips.
- Open the iPhone – Rotate so the right edge faces you. Swing the screen up from the right side like a book cover. Prop the screen upright while working.
- Remove battery connector cover – Use a Y000 screwdriver to remove all 8 screws (5× 1.3 mm, 2× 1.6 mm, 1× 1.9 mm). Slide the cover downward with tweezers to clear the flex cables.
- Disconnect battery – Pry the battery connector straight up using a spudger. Bend it slightly away from the socket to prevent accidental contact.
- Disconnect display cables – Pry up the first and second display connectors straight up from their sockets using a spudger.
- Remove the screen – Lift the screen assembly free and set aside.
- Remove earpiece speaker screws – Use a Phillips screwdriver to remove the two 1.6 mm screws securing the earpiece speaker.
- Pry up the earpiece speaker – Insert a spudger under the right edge of the earpiece speaker and tilt downward to pry it up.
- Remove the earpiece speaker – Use tweezers or fingers to lift it out.
- Install new earpiece speaker – Seat the replacement, ensuring the rubber gasket on the top-right edge aligns correctly with its recess in the frame.
- Reassemble in reverse order – Reinstall screws, reconnect display cables and battery, and reseat the screen. Apply new adhesive after cleaning surfaces with >90% isopropyl alcohol.
Notes
- Do not insert picks more than 3 mm at any point — internal components and top sensors can be damaged.
- Do not slide picks along the left edge of the screen — flex cables run along this side.
- When reconnecting press connectors, align carefully and press one side at a time. Do not press the middle.
- When reseating the screen, align the top edge clips first, then press the rest of the screen down.
- Test the device fully (earpiece, display, all functions) before applying new adhesive and sealing the screen.
- IP water/dust resistance rating will likely not be restored after this repair.
- Compare the replacement part to the original before installing — transfer any remaining components as needed and remove adhesive backings.
