Summary
Step-by-step procedure to replace the battery in an iPhone 14 Pro Max. Discharge battery below 25% before starting. Replacement adhesive is required for reassembly; note that IP rating will not be restored after repair.
Procedure
- Power off the iPhone completely before beginning.
- Remove two 6.8 mm pentalobe P2 screws from the bottom edge.
- Mark opening picks at 3 mm from the tip to prevent inserting too deep.
- If screen is cracked, cover with clear packing tape before proceeding.
- Heat the bottom edge with a hair dryer for ~90 seconds until slightly too hot to touch.
- Apply suction to the bottom of the screen and pull up to create a gap; insert an opening pick under the plastic bezel.
- Heat and slice adhesive around the right edge, top edge, and left edge sequentially — do not insert pick more than 3 mm. Do not insert pick along the left edge cable area; instead, twist two picks simultaneously at the bottom-left corner to release clips.
- Open the screen by swinging it up from the right side like a book. Lean it against something stable.
- Remove 8 screws securing the battery connector cover using a Y000 screwdriver (5× 1.3 mm, 2× 1.6 mm, 1× 1.9 mm). Track each screw by location.
- Slide off the battery connector cover using tweezers.
- Disconnect the battery cable by prying straight up with a spudger. Bend connector away from the board to prevent accidental contact.
- Disconnect both display cables by prying straight up. When reconnecting, press one side down until it clicks, then the other — do not press the middle.
- Remove the screen.
- Remove the loudspeaker: unscrew 4 Phillips screws (1.5 mm), pry up from bottom-right corner, tilt to separate from adhesive strip, remove.
- Disconnect and remove the Taptic Engine: disconnect connector, remove 1× 1.8 mm and 1× 2.3 mm Phillips screws plus 1× 2.9 mm standoff screw, then lift out. Transfer adhesive-backed strip to replacement part if needed.
- Peel up all four battery adhesive pull-tabs (two on bottom edge, two on top edge) using blunt tweezers.
- Pull each strip slowly at a low angle toward the bottom of the iPhone. Keep strips flat; do not press down on the battery.
- If strips break: apply 90%+ isopropyl alcohol under the battery edge near broken adhesive, wait 1 minute, then gently lift with an opening pick or spudger. Never forcefully lever or puncture the battery.
- Remove the battery. Wipe out any remaining isopropyl alcohol before installing the new battery.
- Reassemble in reverse order. Apply new adhesive after cleaning surfaces with 90%+ isopropyl alcohol.
- Power on and test all functions before sealing the screen.
- Perform a force restart after full reassembly.
- Calibrate the battery after repair. On iOS 18+, use Apple’s Repair Assistant: Settings → General → About → Parts & Service History → Restart & Finish Repair.
Notes
- Do not begin disassembly until battery is below 25% charge. If battery is swollen, take additional precautions.
- Do not insert any pick more than 3 mm to avoid damaging internal cables and sensors.
- On iOS 17.6 and earlier, a battery “genuineness” warning may appear even with authentic parts — can be safely ignored if device functions normally.
- Resealing the device will not restore the original IP rating.
- Screw lengths differ significantly — keep all screws organized by location throughout the repair.
- Do not puncture, deform, or forcefully pry the battery at any point.
- Do not reinstall a damaged or deformed battery.
