Things you should know:

The purpose of recovery mode is to complete an iOS Restore. This will erase ALL of the data off of the device, so it is important that the T&Cs are signed by the customer prior to completing the recovery, regardless of whether the iPad was already in recovery mode when it was brought in or not.

iOS updates that are installed basically install on top of each individual existing update. Over time, this can cause glitches & corruptions within the file structure of the operating system. When you complete the iOS restore, iTunes basically uninstalls every single update the device has ever received- then it will reinstall the most recent update back onto the device. It is important that the customer does not complete a Restore from iCloud after the iOS restore has been completed, as the iCloud Restore will install the exact same issue right back onto the device.

iTunes will need to be installed on the computer & up to date prior to completing the restore.

Start with the iPad powered off when attempting to put the device in recovery mode. Once you see the Apple logo, plug it into the computer.

It may take a few tries to get it into recovery mode successfully. The link below will take you directly to the Apple website for images/videos & how-to’s in case you get confused.
