iOS Restore / Restore Through iTunes

Over time, iOS updates can cause glitches/corruption within the file system on an Apple device. The device will do extremely funky things, such as bootlooping, freezing, ghost touching, randomly shutting off, not recognizing phone service, etc. The device may also get stuck on the Apple logo, a loading/progress bar, or it will be in recovery mode, prompting the user to plug the device into iTunes to complete a restore.

While we can definitely help the customer out in any of these scenarios, it is extremely important that the customer has signed the pre-repair T&Cs prior to checking in the device. The iOS restore will delete all of the customer’s data & may trigger the Activation lock. Ultimately, our job is to only restore the device. It is up to the customer to ensure all of their data is backed up prior to us completing the restore. We can help them get set back up afterwards, however they will need to have their AppleID & password handy to restore anything from iCloud. Sometimes, completing an iCloud Restore can even reinstall the same problem back onto the device, so ensure we set proper expectations with the customer prior to starting the repair.

Completing an iOS Restore/Restore Through iTunes:

1. Power off the device & open up iTunes on the computer.

2. Utilize the correct method to put the device into recovery mode. All of the available Recovery Mode methods can be found in the iOS- iPhone/iPad folder.

(If the device is already in recovery mode, power it off & proceed to step 3).

3. Plug the appropriate cable (either USB-lightning or USB-C) into the computer. Then, plug the cable into the device. The device should automatically power up & show the Apple logo.

4. Once the device is powered up in recovery mode, it should automatically recognize the device on the computer/in iTunes. On the top-left hand corner of the screen, you will see either a small phone or tablet icon. Click on that icon to open up the device manager page. See image below.

5. Next, you will want to click on the option that says “Summary.”

6. From there, find the option for Restore on the right-hand side of the screen. You will get a pop-up window that asks if you’d like to Update or Restore; select Restore. The restore process can take up to a few hours to complete, & you may have to attempt the restore a few times before it’ll go through as well.
