Summary
Step-by-step procedure to replace the LiDAR sensor on an iPhone 14 Pro Max. Requires full screen removal and rear camera assembly removal to access the sensor. Replacement adhesive is needed for reassembly; device will likely lose its IP rating after repair.
Procedure
Preparation
- Power off the iPhone before beginning.
- Remove the two 6.8 mm pentalobe P2 screws from the bottom edge.
- Mark an opening pick at 3 mm from the tip to prevent over-insertion. Tape over any cracked screen glass before proceeding.
Open the Device
- Apply heat to the bottom edge for ~90 seconds until slightly too hot to touch.
- Apply suction to the bottom edge and pull to create a gap; insert an opening pick under the screen’s plastic bezel (max 3 mm depth).
- Heat and slice adhesive along the right edge, sliding the pick from the bottom-right corner to the top-right corner.
- Heat the top edge; slide the pick from the top-right corner halfway across the top — stop before the earpiece speaker cut-out. Do not exceed 3 mm depth.
- Heat the left edge. Do not insert a pick along the left edge — delicate cables run here. Instead, insert a pick at the bottom-left corner and twist both picks simultaneously to release the left edge clips.
- Rotate the iPhone so the right edge faces you. Swing the screen up from the right side like a book cover. Prop the screen upright.
Disconnect Battery and Screen
- Use a Y000 screwdriver to remove the 8 screws securing the battery connector cover (5× 1.3 mm, 2× 1.6 mm, 1× 1.9 mm). Slide the cover downward and remove it.
- Disconnect the battery connector using a spudger — pry straight up. Bend the connector away to prevent accidental contact.
- Disconnect both display cables using a spudger (pry straight up on each).
- Remove the screen. Clean adhesive areas with isopropyl alcohol (>90%) and apply new adhesive as needed.
Remove Rear Camera Assembly
- Use a Y000 screwdriver to remove 4× 1.5 mm and 1× 1.2 mm Y000 screws, plus 1× 1.7 mm Phillips screw securing the rear camera assembly cover.
- Grip the cover with tweezers, slide it toward the volume buttons to free the small metal edge, and remove the cover.
- Disconnect the ultra-wide/telephoto camera cable (pry straight up with spudger).
- Disconnect the wide lens camera cable (pry straight up with spudger).
- Insert a spudger under the bottom edge of the rear camera assembly and pry upward. Remove the assembly with tweezers or fingers.
Replace LiDAR Sensor
- Use a standoff screwdriver to remove the 2.8 mm standoff screw securing the LiDAR sensor cover.
- Remove the LiDAR sensor cover with tweezers.
- Disconnect the LiDAR sensor cable — pry straight up with a spudger.
- Insert the flat end of a spudger under the top edge of the LiDAR sensor and pry upward.
- Remove the LiDAR sensor with tweezers.
- Install the replacement LiDAR sensor and reassemble in reverse order.
Notes
- Screw tracking is critical — each screw must return to its exact original location to avoid damage.
- Do not insert opening picks more than 3 mm at any point; internal components and top sensors can be damaged.
- Do not insert picks along the left edge of the screen — flex cables run along this side.
- Before sealing the screen, power on the device and test all functions; power back down before continuing reassembly.
- When reattaching press-fit connectors, align carefully and press one side at a time — pressing the center can bend pins.
- When reinstalling the rear camera cover, ensure the small metal edge is properly seated in its recess in the frame.
- Device will likely lose its IP rating after repair due to adhesive replacement.
- Compare the new LiDAR sensor to the original before installation; transfer any components or remove adhesive backings as needed.
