Summary

Covers removal and replacement of the front-facing camera and Face ID sensor assembly on the iPhone 14 Pro Max. The assembly is paired to the logic board; replacing it will disable Face ID unless recalibrated via Apple’s Repair Assistant (iOS 18+ only).

Procedure

  1. Power off the iPhone before starting.
  2. Remove the two 6.8 mm pentalobe P2 screws on the bottom edge.
  3. Mark opening picks at 3 mm from the tip to prevent over-insertion.
  4. If screen is cracked, cover it with clear packing tape and wear safety glasses.
  5. Heat the bottom edge with a hair dryer (~90 seconds) until slightly too hot to touch. Apply suction cup and insert an opening pick under the plastic bezel no deeper than 3 mm.
  6. Heat and slice the right edge adhesive: slide pick from bottom-right corner up to the top-right corner.
  7. Heat the top edge and slide pick from top-right corner halfway across the top — stop before the earpiece speaker cut-out. Do not exceed 3 mm depth.
  8. Heat the left edge. Do not insert a pick along the left edge — delicate cables run here. Instead, insert a second pick at the bottom-left corner and twist both picks simultaneously to release the left edge clips.
  9. Open the screen by swinging it up from the right side like a book. Prop it upright against a stable support.
  10. Remove the eight Y000 screws securing the battery connector cover (5× 1.3 mm, 2× 1.6 mm, 1× 1.9 mm). Slide the cover downward to remove.
  11. Disconnect the battery by prying the connector straight up with a spudger. Bend it slightly away from the socket.
  12. Disconnect both display cables by prying straight up. When reconnecting, press one side down until it clicks, then the other — never press the middle.
  13. Remove the screen assembly.
  14. Remove the two 1.6 mm Phillips screws securing the earpiece speaker. Pry up from the right edge using a spudger and remove the speaker.
  15. Disconnect the camera and sensor cables by prying connectors straight up from their sockets.
  16. Remove the front-facing camera and sensor assembly using tweezers or fingers.
  17. Install the replacement assembly in reverse order. Reconnect cables, reassemble screen, and reinstall all screws in their original positions.
  18. Test the device before applying new adhesive and sealing the screen.
  19. On iOS 18+, navigate to Settings → General → About → Parts & Service History and run Repair Assistant to recalibrate the new camera.

Notes

  • Face ID will not function after replacing this assembly unless recalibrated. On iOS 17.6 and earlier, only Apple or an Apple Authorized technician can restore Face ID. On iOS 18+, use Apple’s Repair Assistant with a genuine replacement part.
  • Do not insert picks more than 3 mm at any point — internal components and top sensors are easily damaged.
  • Do not insert picks along the left edge — flex cables run directly behind it.
  • Replacement adhesive is required to reseal the screen; IP water/dust resistance rating will not be fully restored after repair.
  • When removing the earpiece speaker, ensure the rubber gasket on the top-right edge is correctly seated in its recess during reinstallation.
  • Avoid damaging the black silicone seals around board connectors — they provide water and dust protection.
  • Keep all screws organized by location; incorrect screw placement can cause internal damage.
