Type: External SOP
Procedure
-
Attempt to unlock your device using your PIN, pattern, or password. If you cannot remember your screen lock credentials, proceed to the next steps.
-
Try your Google Account credentials if prompted after multiple failed unlock attempts (available on some older Android versions).
-
If you still cannot unlock the device, you must erase it:
-
Option A – Erase via Find My Device (remote erase):
- From another device or computer, go to android.com/find.
- Sign in with the Google Account associated with the locked device.
- Select the locked device.
- Choose Erase Device and confirm.
- Wait for the device to be erased remotely (device must be online).
-
Option B – Erase via Android Recovery Mode (factory reset):
- Power off the device completely.
- Boot into Recovery Mode (button combination varies by manufacturer — commonly Power + Volume Down or Power + Volume Up).
- Use the volume buttons to navigate to Wipe data / Factory reset.
- Press the Power button to confirm the selection.
- Confirm the reset when prompted.
- Select Reboot system now once complete.
-
Set up the device again after the erase is complete.
-
Set a new screen lock during or after the setup process.
-
If you cannot sign in to your Google Account after the reset, follow Google’s account recovery process at accounts.google.com/signin/recovery.
Notes
⚠️ Warning: Erasing the device will permanently delete all data stored on the device, including apps, photos, and settings. Ensure you have backups if possible before proceeding.
⚠️ Factory Reset Protection (FRP): After a factory reset, you will be required to sign in with the Google Account that was previously associated with the device. If you do not know those credentials, access will be blocked.
ℹ️ The Recovery Mode button combination varies by device manufacturer and model. Consult your device manufacturer’s documentation if the standard combination does not work.
ℹ️ Remote erase via Find My Device requires the locked device to have an active internet connection and location/Find My Device enabled prior to being locked.
